State Breaks Ground on 50-bed Expansion of Anoka-Metro Regional Treatment Center, Rep. Frederick Champions Infrastructure Investment

Monday, September 28, 2026

St. Paul, MN - This month, state officials broke ground on a 50-bed expansion of the Anoka-Metro Regional Treatment Center, thanks to a $75 million investment in Minnesota’s largest state-operated behavioral health hospital.

State Representative Luke Frederick (DFL - Mankato), the DFL Vice Chair of the House Capital Investment Committee, was instrumental in securing $55 million for the project in the 2025 Capital Investment Bonding Bill.

“Addressing Minnesota’s mental health needs takes many forms, including updating the aging infrastructure to ensure our state is in the strongest position possible,” said Rep. Frederick. “When we have a lack of beds, that impacts our ability to deliver the support our neighbors need, and in turn overburdens our mental health system. This expansion is a significant step in the right direction when it comes to building the safety net Minnesota deserves.”

The new, 65,500-square-foot, 50-bed secured inpatient facility replaces the 1950s-era Miller Building on the 73-acre campus. Once completed, the expansion is expected to serve 150-200 additional patients annually.

Construction will continue through December 2027, with doors opening to patients the following year.
