Legislative UpdateDear Friends and Neighbors, As we head into the final week of the legislative session, we’re in crunch time. The official end date is May 19th, but with some big bills still on the table and a few key decisions yet to be made, finishing on time is starting to look a little less likely. A lot of our early session was delayed when some of our colleagues chose to stay home, which set us back more than we’d hoped. And now, we’re feeling the effects of that delay. That said, we’ve made great strides in the past couple of weeks. Most of the budget bills have made their way through the Minnesota House, and we’re down to just a handful left. While some of my Democrat colleagues are starting to get anxious about time running out, I’m staying optimistic. There’s still a lot of work to do, but I’m confident we can get it done with a little extra effort next week. I’m proud to say that Republicans have shown up and been ready to work since Day 1. We’ve been focused on getting the job done, even when the going got tough, and we’re not slowing down now. Looking ahead, I’m hopeful that we can push through the remaining bills early next week. The Senate is doing its part, and once both chambers have approved their versions, we’ll work out any differences and send it all to the Governor for approval. When I campaigned last fall, I made a promise to you to fight for lower taxes and smarter government spending. That’s exactly what I’ve been working on every day this session. I’m voting for bills that aim to right-size government and cut unnecessary spending, while voting against proposals that would raise your taxes or lock in unsustainable spending. Why does this matter? Well, after last session, we’re dealing with a $6 billion deficit. This comes after an $18 billion surplus was squandered and $10 billion in new taxes were added. And during that time, the size of government grew by nearly 40%, with thousands of new employees and skyrocketing salaries. That’s not the way to run a responsible budget, and we can’t keep going down that road. Minnesotans deserve a government that works efficiently and puts taxpayers first. I’m committed to making sure we break the cycle of wasteful spending and put our state on a path to financial stability. In the end, I’m confident we’ll find a way to balance the budget in a way that makes sense for everyone. It’ll take cooperation, and yes, some compromise, but I’m ready for that. Together, we can get it done.
Standing Up for Nonpublic Education![]() On Wednesday, I had the privilege of joining students, parents, educators, and community leaders at the Capitol to show our support for nonpublic education. It was an inspiring gathering, and I was reminded once again of the vital role these schools play in providing meaningful education to many Minnesota families. We all know that education is one of the most important issues facing our state, and I believe we should be working together to ensure that every student, regardless of the type of school they attend, has the resources and support they need to succeed. Unfortunately, the Governor’s proposed cuts to aid for nonpublic schools would make it harder for these institutions to thrive and provide that support. I’m proud to say that Republicans in the Minnesota House, along with many of our Senate colleagues, are committed to ensuring that nonpublic schools continue to receive the support they need. These schools are an important part of our state’s education landscape, and we believe in standing by families who depend on them. It’s crucial that we approach education funding with a spirit of unity and opportunity for all Minnesotans. Every student deserves the chance to succeed, no matter where they go to school. That’s the Minnesota we should be working toward—one that respects and values all educational choices. I invite you to check out House Republican Leader Niska’s comments on this important issue [HERE].
Standing Strong Against New TaxesAs a member of the taxes committee, I am proud to report that House Republicans are holding the line: our taxes omnibus bill makes it clear—we’re not raising your taxes. Period. This bill blocks a staggering $8 billion in new taxes that were on the table and ensures that Minnesotans won’t see a single tax increase over the next two years. That’s a huge win for working families, seniors, veterans, and small business owners. And it’s a major departure from what we saw last session, when Democrats pushed through over $10 billion in tax hikes—even with an $18 billion surplus. We're also taking real steps to rein in government spending. Our bill cuts $40 million from the budget in each of the next two cycles to help head off future deficits before they become a problem. But we didn’t stop at “no new taxes.” We’re delivering real, targeted relief where it counts—helping disabled veterans, expanding tax deferral options for seniors, and giving small retailers a break through a sales tax credit. This bill reflects our Republican values: living within our means, protecting taxpayers, and making smart choices for Minnesota’s future.
Celebrating National Small Business Week![]() As we celebrate National Small Business Week, I want to take a moment to recognize the heart and soul of our economy—small businesses. These are the local shops, restaurants, and family-run enterprises that provide jobs, support our communities, and make Minnesota such a special place to live. I’m committed to making Minnesota a state where small businesses can thrive. Whether it’s finding ways to reduce the burden of regulations or advocating for policies that provide meaningful support, I’m always looking for solutions to make life easier for small business owners. One thing I’ve been hearing loud and clear from small business owners across the state is that they simply cannot afford to roll out paid family leave. This has been the number one concern raised by those who are struggling to balance supporting their employees while keeping their businesses afloat. We understand this challenge, and that’s why we’re working hard to refine policies surrounding paid family leave in a way that is both sustainable and realistic for businesses of all sizes. It’s crucial that when we roll out support for businesses, it’s done in a way that doesn’t burden them further, but instead helps them thrive. As we continue to work on solutions, I’m committed to ensuring that small businesses have the resources they need to grow and succeed. Thank you to all the small business owners who are the backbone of our communities. I’m proud to fight for policies that allow you to grow and succeed.
Holding Government AccountableLast week, the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee uncovered deeply troubling evidence about Attorney General Keith Ellison’s involvement in the Feeding Our Future Scandal—the largest fraud case in Minnesota’s history. Newly released audio recordings reveal that Ellison was not only aware of concerns surrounding certain organizations under investigation, but actively sympathized with them. Some of these very organizations were later indicted for stealing millions in taxpayer dollars. Even more concerning, Ellison offered to apply pressure to state agencies on their behalf—agencies he is supposed to represent as Minnesota’s top legal authority. Despite claims from his office that it "jumpstarted" the investigation in 2022, Ellison previously testified that he had no knowledge of the scandal during a 2021 meeting with individuals connected to the scheme. But the audio tells a different story—and Minnesotans deserve answers. This isn’t about politics. It’s about integrity. Public officials have a duty to act with transparency and uphold the law—not bend it to serve certain interests. When that duty is compromised, it erodes the trust our communities place in government. I will continue to support every effort to uncover the full truth and ensure those in power are held accountable. The people of Minnesota deserve leadership they can trust and a system that works for them—not against them. You can view a clip from last Monday's Fraud Committee [HERE].
Big Shoutout to Aaron—Our Newest Official House Page!![]() I’m absolutely thrilled to share that Aaron participated in the House Page Program this week! I first met him two years ago when he took part in the program for the first time, and even then, it was clear he had something special. Now a junior in high school, Aaron returned to the Capitol this week and did an incredible job. We are so proud of you, Aaron—keep reaching for the stars! Watching students like Aaron grow from curious learners into confident young leaders is exactly why the High School Page Program is so meaningful. If you're a high school junior (or know one!) who’s passionate about government, policy, or just wants to experience the inner workings of the Minnesota Legislature up close, I highly recommend checking it out. Participants spend a jam-packed week in Saint Paul meeting with lawmakers, paging on the House floor, taking part in mock committee hearings, and getting a real behind-the-scenes look at state government. It's hands-on, fast-paced, and unforgettable. Curious? Inspired? Excited? Good! Reach out to my office—we’d love to help you or someone you know take the first step toward an experience that just might change your life.
Happy Mother’s Day Weekend![]() As we head into Mother’s Day weekend, I want to take a moment to honor and celebrate all the incredible moms, grandmas, stepmoms, foster moms, and mother figures who give so much of themselves every single day. Your strength, love, and selflessness are the foundation of our families and our communities. A special shoutout to two of the most important women in my life—my mom and my wife, Jennifer. Thank you both for everything you do to hold our families together, to nurture, to encourage, and to love unconditionally. We are who we are because of you. To all the moms out there: I hope this weekend brings you the rest, appreciation, and joy you so deeply deserve. Thank you for being the everyday heroes who make the world a better place—one scraped knee, packed lunch, late-night talk, and loving hug at a time. Wishing you a beautiful and blessed Mother’s Day.
