Legislative UpdateDear Friends and Neighbors, As we approach the final stretch of the legislative session, things are moving quickly here at the Capitol. This past week has been filled with long floor sessions, detailed discussions, and hard work as we tackle critical issues facing our state. From improving public safety to fighting for local taxpayers, we are focused on delivering results that make a real difference for Minnesotans. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue working for you, and I’m excited to share some of the progress we’ve made. Lets dive in!
Prioritizing Public Safety: Keeping Repeat DWI Offenders off Minnesota Roads![]() I was proud to co-author House File 2130 alongside Representative Larry Kraft (D–St. Louis Park) to tackle a dangerous and ongoing problem in our state—repeat drunk driving. This legislation was introduced in response to the tragic Park Tavern incident, where a repeat offender’s impaired driving led to devastating consequences. I’m pleased to share that this important measure was included in this year’s Transportation Omnibus Bill. Driving in Minnesota is a privilege, not a right. Our bill strengthens ignition interlock requirements for individuals with multiple DWI offenses, ensuring that they can’t get back behind the wheel unless they’ve demonstrated real behavioral change. Longer interlock periods not only hold repeat offenders accountable—they also give law enforcement and the public greater peace of mind. No one should have to fear that a fun night out could turn tragic because someone with a history of impaired driving was allowed to slip through the cracks. This legislation is about consistency, accountability, and, most importantly, saving lives. Keeping Minnesotans safe is not a partisan issue—it's a shared responsibility. I'm grateful for the bipartisan support on this commonsense reform, and I’ll continue to stand up for policies that protect families on our roads. Learn more about the story and impact behind my bill [HERE]. I'm proud of the work behind it—and even more excited for what it means for Minnesotans.
Standing Up for Local TaxpayersWhen it comes to tough conversations about taxes, it helps to understand the dynamics at play. Right now at the Capitol, things are a bit unusual: the House is closely divided, while the Senate and Governor’s office are controlled by the DFL party. That puts the House in a unique position—we may not have a majority, but we do have just enough influence to slow down proposals that could be detrimental to Minnesotans. We’re using that leverage to push back on policies that would hit families, farmers, seniors and small businesses where it hurts—right in the wallet. One major concern? A proposal in the Governor’s DHS budget that would shift $460 million in costs from the state onto counties. Local officials from across Minnesota flagged this back in February, warning that it would leave counties scrambling to cover the difference. What does that mean in practical terms? Some counties in Minnesota are looking at property tax increases—just to keep the lights on and services running. That’s not theoretical. That’s real money coming out of real pockets, all because of decisions made at the state level. Minnesotans expect the state to lead—not pass the buck. Shifting costs without a plan to cover them isn’t sustainable, and it’s not fair to local governments or the people they serve. Whether you live in a metro suburb or a rural township, you deserve better than being left to pick up the pieces. We’re standing with counties to stop this cost shift before it gets any further. But the conversation doesn’t end at the Capitol—we need Minnesotans to stay engaged, speak up, and make it clear: leadership means taking responsibility, not offloading it.
Honoring the National Day of Prayer![]() This week, I had the privilege of attending a beautiful Day of Prayer celebration with the Lakeville faith community in anticipation of the National Day of Prayer. Their theme, “Many streams, one river,” struck a deep chord with me. It’s a reminder that while we come from different faith backgrounds and life experiences, we are united by a shared desire to seek divine guidance, support one another, and serve our communities with compassion. At a time when our country often feels so divided, this gathering was a powerful example of the good that can happen when we set aside differences and come together in prayer and purpose. That spirit of unity carried into the State Capitol, where we read a House Resolution recognizing the National Day of Prayer and the importance of faith in public life. I’m grateful for communities like Lakeville who lead with grace and remind us of the strength we find in coming together. ![]()
Skol, Coach O’Connell!![]() We had an awesome moment at the Capitol this week as we welcomed Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell to the House floor. Coach O’Connell was recently named the 2024 NFL Coach of the Year, and we were proud to recognize him with an official House Resolution to celebrate the honor. It’s no secret that Coach O’Connell has brought a new spark to the Vikings. His leadership, drive, and ability to rally the team have made a real difference—not just on the scoreboard, but across the whole state. He’s earned the respect of players, fans, and now, the legislature too. It was an exciting visit, and we’re proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition. Congratulations, Coach—and Skol Vikings! ![]()
