RELEASE: Rep. Joy Statement on Budget Forecast Showing Looming Deficit

Thursday, December 7, 2023

SAINT PAUL – Rep. Jim Joy (R-Hawley) released the following statement on the state budget forecast which showed a $2.4 billion surplus heading into next session, but a looming $2.3 billion deficit beginning in 2025:

“Projections of a budget deficit are no surprise after Democrats spent a historic $17.5 billion surplus session to grow government by 40%. Instead of providing Minnesotans with permanent, meaningful tax relief to help their family budgets, which are being stretched thin by higher prices for gas, groceries, and energy bills, Democrats instead raised their taxes by $10 billion.

“Our state government is in desperate need of balance and commonsense. If Minnesota continues on this path, spending will quickly outpace revenue, and we will find ourselves dealing with a budget deficit. Government needs to be a good steward of Minnesotans' hard-earned tax dollars. It’s time we end the reckless spending spree and bring a little more fiscal conservatism to St. Paul.”
