Capitol Update

Friday, January 13, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

We’ve had another incredibly busy week at the House, with several important actions which affect our community. Let’s get right into it!

1. Efficient Government - Governor Signs Tax Conformity Bill

  • On Thursday, I attended the Governor’s signing of the federal tax conformity bill, which I co-authored as vice chair of the House Taxes Committee. This bill will make several changes to bring Minnesota into conformity with federal tax law resulting in over $100 million in tax cuts for families and businesses while simplifying future tax filings.
  • The fact that we were able to get this critical bill out the door in the second week of session is a testament to our commitment to efficient and smart governance. I look forward to continuing this momentum for the remainder of the year as we look to make this a historically productive session.
  • The bill passed with unanimous, bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.

2. Blaine in the House! - Blaine Resident Testifies on Voting Reform

  • I want to thank Blaine resident Kailez Campbell for her excellent testimony at the Capitol this week on a bill I’m co-authoring that would make it easier for young people to participate in our democracy once they’re 18 by allowing them to pre-register to vote.
  • Our younger generations have some of the lowest voter turnout rates. It is my hope that this bill will help change that!
  • Watch Kailez’s testimony here.

3. One Last Thing - Hearing on Federal Infrastructure Funds

  • I voted to approve a bill I co-authored in the House Transportation Committee authorizing over $300 million in federal funds to be used on infrastructure projects across Minnesota.
  • These funds can be used on projects like upgrading highway 65! This is a top priority of mine and I will continue to work diligently to make this a reality for our community.
  • There’s more to come as this is only a portion of the $4.8 billion provided to Minnesota by President Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs act.
