Legislative Update - Prioritizing Children

Friday, April 19, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

We have about a month left of session, and we are working hard to pass our remaining policy bills and supplemental budgets which improve the lives of working and middle class Minnesotans. Here’s an update from the Capitol:

1. Centennial Schools Early Childhood Center - Teaching Our Youngest Learners

  • Thanks to the Centennial Early Childhood team for showing me the amazing work they do during my tour this week!
  • From preparing students to read, to teaching important social emotional learning, to educating caregivers as well, this team does so much for our youngest learners and their families.
  • It’s important that we increase investments in early education so that every child can get a great start!

2. Advocacy for Children Day - Story Time!

  • I had a wonderful time reading to kids at the Capitol for Advocacy for Children Day!
  • I know that for many families the cost of child care is a huge burden. That’s why I’ve focused on affordable childcare in my time as your Representative.
  • One of the main initiatives I’ve worked on is the Great Start Affordability Plan. This plan would assist families with child care expenses so they don’t have to choose between their child's education and day to day expenses.

3. House Supplemental Tax Bill - Expanding the Child Tax Credit

  • My bill to expand the Child Tax Credit to include 18-year-old children was included in the House Tax Bill. The previous limit was 17-year-olds.
  • Studies show that children are staying at home for longer, meaning that families need assistance even after their child turns 18.
  • This legislation means that more families will receive our nation leading Child Tax Credit that’s projected to reduce childhood poverty in Minnesota by 33%!
