Capitol Newsletter from Rep. Andrew Myers

Friday, March 10, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

Best of luck to both the Orono and Minnetonka boys hockey teams that are competing in the State High School Hockey Tournament this week in St. Paul! The entire community is proud of you and wishes you the best!

Clean Water Infrastructure

Good news Mound residents!

On Monday, the Minnesota House approved legislation that provides funding for infrastructure projects around the state. Among the projects included was $10.3 million to the City of Mound for improvements to water infrastructure in the city. This includes the construction of a new clean water well, decommissioning and sealing of two wells, installation of a new water main, and capital improvements to the water treatment facility.

In my thousands of conversations while running for office and during my time serving as your voice in St. Paul, the number one priority I heard from Mound residents was centered around concerns regarding safe and clean drinking water in the city. That’s why I fought so hard to make sure this project was included in the bill.

Monday’s vote in the House is a critical next step in securing this funding and is the result of hard work, cultivating relationships, and building bridges here in St. Paul. While others in the past have tried and failed, this shows that working together can have huge benefits for communities in Your Backyard.

The bill now heads to the Senate where it awaits a vote from Senators.

Highway 7 Safety

Another top priority for our communities centers around safety on Highway 7. That’s why I’ve been working hard to find short-term and long-term solutions that will improve safety on this important roadway that so many of us use every day.

Last week I met with officials from MNDOT to discuss ways we can make Highway 7 safer.

MyersMNDOT

This is the 2nd time we've met since the legislative session began and we discussed short-term mitigation strategies that we need right now as well as long-term fixes for the future.

In addition to these meetings with MNDOT, I have co-authored two bills with my seatmate, Rep. Patty Acomb, addressing this important issue.

The first bill would appropriate funding for a feasibility study, environmental analysis, and preliminary design of improvements to Highway 7. The second bill appropriates funding for a Highway 7 Corridor Coalition that would consist of cities, counties, and school districts as they look for solutions to the safety problems facing their communities.

Attention Students!

I am inviting all local students to participate in a coloring contest this spring hosted by my legislative office! Students in elementary, middle, or high school can draw, color, or paint, a picture of the Minnesota State Capitol building. Submissions will be displayed in my office at the State Office Building in St. Paul for all to see! When we close the submission date in 2-3 weeks, I will have folks vote on the pictures.
