Dear Neighbors,

Education in Your Backyard means working with and listening to principals, superintendents, school board members and our students.

Last month, I enjoyed two great opportunities to meet with Minnetonka School Board Chair Lisa Wagner, Superintendent David Law, and students from Minnetonka High School. Hearing from educators, administrators, and our students better prepares me for this upcoming legislative session as I work hard to support our schools.

I will continue to listen to our boots on the ground and help craft reasonable education policies that support schools in our communities and schools across the state.

Cell Phone Use in Schools

On Monday, the United Kingdom’s Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, announced that the British Government plans to issue nationwide guidance effectively banning the use of cell phones in schools. The new guidelines will be designed to allow students to bring their phones to school so they can be used on the journeys there and back, but they will not be allowed to use them during the school day.

Data continues to show the harmful impacts that cell phone use, especially in schools, has on students and there has been discussion in St. Paul about whether state government should be doing more to raise awareness about this.

If you’re a parent, student, teacher, or someone that works in schools, I want to hear directly from you on this important topic! Please email me at rep.andrew.myers@house.mn.gov or call me at 651-296-9188 to share your thoughts.

Have a great day and Go Twins!

Andrew
