Zeleznikar applauds passage of unemployment benefits extension for miners

ST. PAUL - The Minnesota House of Representatives approved legislation today that provides a $10 million extension of unemployment benefits for roughly 400 miners laid off from Cleveland-Cliffs Northshore Mining operations last May. Representative Natalie Zeleznikar, R-Fredenberg Township, released the following statement on the bill's passage.

"I am glad to see this bill pass to provide the support needed to help the families affected by these layoffs in our area. These mine employees are a critical anchor in our community, and I was proud to support this important bill. Our community is home to many of these affected miners, and it is so encouraging to see that we can work quickly and in a bipartisan way to get people the help they need."

The bill, SF 40, now heads to Gov. Walz for his signature. Representative Zeleznikar is also a coauthor on HF 344, a bill that would declare Minnesota a mining-friendly state.
