Rep. Zeleznikar Statement on Gov. Walz Executive Order Banning Mining in Iron Range
Saint Paul, MN - Representative Natalie Zeleznikar (R- Fredenberg Township) issued the following statement today in response to Gov. Walz’s Executive Order effectively banning the mining of nonferrous metals on the Iron Range.
"In 2023, Governor Walz signed a bill requiring a 100% carbon-free electric system by 2040. Today, he signed an executive order that prevents our state from developing the critical minerals needed to build the infrastructure required to achieve his plan, while also requiring 80% compliance within four years. We should be developing Minnesota’s resources to help build that system. Copper for transmission, nickel and cobalt for batteries, and other critical minerals are not optional, they are the physical building blocks of electrification.
Responsible domestic production can strengthen our supply chain, create high-paying Minnesota jobs, and reduce our dependence on foreign sources. Why pay for supplies that allow China to thrive when the resources in our own backyard can help reduce energy costs and strengthen our national security by producing and refining these minerals here in the United States? China does not follow OSHA, wage, or Minnesota labor standards, making this executive order contradictory to the Democrats’ 2040 energy plan."
