Happy Thanksgiving - November Update

Dear Northlanders,

It is hard to believe the month of Thanksgiving is already here. It's a time to pause, reflect, and make a daily effort to appreciate the blessings around us. This season, I have been especially mindful of those who serve our nation. As the federal government shutdown loomed in recent weeks, I worked on initiatives to support National Guard members who went unpaid during the closure and faced financial hardship while furloughed. These are the people who protect us, and this Thanksgiving and Christmas season offers us an opportunity to support and thank them in return.

Northlanders who wish to help can donate through the Proctor Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Venmo account, or drop off cash or a check at the Proctor Community Center or Proctor Pizza. In addition, I encourage everyone to join me in supporting our local food shelves. A simple donation can make a tremendous difference for families facing challenges this holiday season.

Over the past two weeks, I began my education tour with full-day visits to Hermantown, Mesabi East, and Proctor Schools. I spent meaningful time with students, teachers, staff, and administrators to learn firsthand what is working well and where additional support is needed from the state. My upcoming visits include Lake Superior Schools in Two Harbors, Duluth Public Schools, Stella Maris Academy, charter schools, and meetings with homeschool cooperatives.

I believe strongly in meeting students where they are learning and listening to all stakeholders about how we can improve educational outcomes, especially ensuring that every child can read at grade level. There is no greater disservice than allowing a student to advance without this essential skill. Reading and basic math comprehension are the foundation for future success, yet currently 50% of Minnesota students are not reading at grade level. We must continue to address this with urgency and purpose.

This month also brought a powerful reminder of community strength. The Brimson Fires devastated homes, but the Brimson community came together on November 15th for a “Brimson Strong” fundraising benefit. Northwoods Band played outdoors surrounded by bonfires, and Northlanders gathered to support their neighbors, enjoy the beautiful fall weather, and uplift one another. It was heartwarming to see such unity. The Brimson Fire Department (recognized as Fire Department of the Year) was present and truly deserving of the honor.

As I continue traveling across our large district, I am always grateful for the conversations I have with people of all ages. Being present in communities makes it easier for you to ask questions, share concerns, and offer ideas without needing to travel long distances to reach me. You are all busy running your lives, and I want to remain accessible whenever you need assistance or have suggestions.

I wish you and your loved ones a blessed and meaningful Thanksgiving. Thank you for the privilege of serving you.

With appreciation,

Rep. Natalie Zeleznikar
