Cities and Counties Are Being Squeezed by State Tax Hikes
Across Minnesota, cities and counties are sounding the alarm about rising costs and shrinking budgets. Property taxes are climbing, not because local leaders want to raise them, but because they are being forced to. The state’s growing list of taxes, mandates, and regulatory costs has left local governments with few options. When the state pushes down expenses without providing resources to offset them, those costs eventually land on the backs of residents.
Over the past few years, state government spending has grown at a record pace. At the same time, the state has added dozens of new programs, fees, and reporting requirements that cities and counties are required to carry out. While state programs are often created with the intention of serving the needs of residents, they add up quickly. From new public safety standards to environmental mandates, every new regulation comes with a price tag. Local officials are being asked to do more with less, and the gap between what is required and what is funded keeps widening.
The result is that counties are dipping into reserves and cities are hiking property taxes just to keep basic services running. Roads still need to be plowed. Emergency services still need to respond. Local governments can only stretch so far before they have to make a tough choice: raise taxes or cut services. Most communities have already done everything they can to trim costs. The reality now is that many have no choice but to pass these costs on to homeowners, renters, and small businesses.
This is not sustainable. Minnesotans are already paying more in nearly every direction. Higher fuel taxes, sales taxes, and fees have hit families hard. Property taxes are rising sharply in many areas, even as inflation continues to squeeze household budgets. The state needs to take responsibility for the pressure it is putting on local governments.
It is time to right size state government. That means focusing on core functions, limiting unnecessary mandates, and giving cities and counties the flexibility to meet local needs without excessive interference from St. Paul. When the state grows beyond its means, it forces everyone else to make up the difference.
Minnesotans deserve a government that works efficiently and spends responsibly. Instead of layering new costs on local governments, the Legislature should be working to relieve the burden. A smaller, more focused state government would help stabilize local budgets, reduce pressure on property taxes, and give residents a little breathing room.
Local leaders are doing their best to keep services running, but they should not have to carry the weight of state decisions. The time has come for the state to stop shifting costs and start managing its own growth. That is the only way we can ensure a sustainable, affordable future for every Minnesota community.
