Interim Update

Dear friends and neighbors,

It’s been so good to be back home, soaking up the sunshine with the good people of District 1B. Summer is flying by—seriously, how is it already August?—and while we may be out of session, the headlines haven’t taken a vacation.

Let’s catch up:

Capitol Chaos, Courtesy of the Senate
In mid-July, Senator Nicole Mitchell went to trial for an incident that happened last April—and the verdict is in. She was found guilty on two felony counts: first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools. With the Senate’s razor-thin DFL majority (just one seat), her conviction has thrown everything into uncertainty, possibly triggering a 33–33 party split. Buckle up!

Adding to the drama, U.S. Senator Kelly Morrison also stepped down recently, which means two Senate seats will be up for grabs in a special election on Tuesday, November 4th. Translation? The balance of power in the Senate just got a lot more interesting. Stay tuned!

Capitol Security Gets a Security Makeover
After a handful of bizarre incidents (including one man who broke into the Capitol claiming to be the governor—yes, you read that right), security is getting a much-needed upgrade. Starting August 6th, most Capitol entrances are now locked. Only two south-side doors remain open during business hours, with Capitol Security and State Patrol standing guard. A full audit is underway to decide whether additional measures—like metal detectors or bag checks—are needed.

Of course no one wants the Capitol to feel like an airport, but we do want it to be safe. I’ll keep you in the loop as discussions move forward.

The Northstar Era Ends
It’s official: Northstar Rail is pulling into the station one final time. After years of low ridership and sky-high costs, Metro Transit plans to retire the line in January 2026. Thanks to persistent efforts by House Transportation Chair Rep. Jon Koznick (R-Lakeville) and others, Northstar will be replaced with expanded bus service—providing more flexibility for riders and a break for taxpayers.

That’s the scoop from the Capitol—but now, let’s bring it back to the home front. Here’s a peek at what I’ve been up to this week around the district!

Lacing Up for a Great Cause!

1

The Greater Grand Forks area is about to get moving—and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of it.

This Saturday, August 9th, I’ll be helping kick off the Law Enforcement 10-78 5K and Community Fun Day—and let me tell you, this event is right up my alley. As a lifelong marathon runner, any excuse to be around a crowd of folks who know the joy (and the occasional pain!) of pounding the pavement is a good day in my book.

But this isn’t just any race. The Law Enforcement 10-78 5K is all about community, camaraderie, and showing our support for local law enforcement. It’s a day where sneakers meet service, and I couldn’t be more honored to be asked to help kick off the race.

So whether you’re racing for a personal record, walking with family, or just showing up to support the cause—come on out and be part of something meaningful. I’ll be there at the starting line, cheering you on, with a smile on my face, and a whole lot of gratitude in my heart for peace officers throughout our entire region.

Let’s run with purpose—and let’s run with pride.

See you Saturday!

Big News from Thief River Falls!

1

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to tour Digi-Key’s impressive new facility in Thief River Falls—and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer. Through targeted incentives from the state of Minnesota, we were able to retain 1000 jobs and add 300 more to the region. But the real heartwarmer? Their brand-new daycare and learning center, built right next door.

As one of the region’s largest employers, Digi-Key continues to invest in the community—and this new resource is going to make a huge difference for working families in our district. Supporting both innovation and childcare? That’s a win-win in my book.

Let’s Stay in Touch!

As summer starts to wind down, I just want to say thank you for staying plugged in. Whether we’re digging into policy at the Capitol or saying hello to neighbors at a county fair, I’m proud to serve such a strong, grounded, and community-minded district.

Got a question? A concern? A brilliant idea you scribbled on a napkin? My door—and inbox—is always open.

Enjoy these last glorious weeks of summer. I’ll see you out and about in the district soon!

All the best,

Representative Steve Gander
