Legislative Update

1

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We’re in the final stretch of the 2025 legislative session—and what a journey it’s been. What should have been the final week has turned into a scramble, thanks to a 23-day delay at the start of session when our Democrat colleagues stepped away from their duties. Now, with the May 19 adjournment deadline fast approaching, we’re doing everything we can to cross the finish line strong.

The good news? There’s now a global budget agreement on the table. This framework—worked out by legislative leaders and Governor Walz—sets the spending targets for the remaining budget bills. The real work now moves to conference committees, where lawmakers like me will dig into the details and finalize the legislation. Some parts will come together quickly, while others may take a bit more time and effort—but we’re ready.

And here’s what I’m especially proud to share: House Republicans held the line—and we delivered some incredible wins for everyday Minnesotans.

This budget marks the largest cut to government spending in state history. We’ve managed to eliminate nearly half of the structural deficit Democrats created after growing government by 40% and raising taxes by $10 billion just two years ago. We’re cleaning up the mess—and we did it without raising taxes on Minnesota families.

Here are just a few of the highlights:

Protected non-public pupil aid—supporting families who choose religious, charter, or homeschool education.

Rolled back the expansion of taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants—with enrollment frozen immediately and adult coverage ending in 2026.

Capped the payroll tax for Paid Family and Medical Leave, saving businesses an estimated $215 million.

Stopped a hike in the Provider Tax, helping keep healthcare more affordable.

Blocked new sales and income tax increases that would’ve burdened working families.

Saved taxpayers hundreds of millions by stopping the Northern Lights Express train to Duluth.

Prevented costly mandates, unnecessary fee hikes, and millions in unaccountable nonprofit spending.

We’ve got a little more work ahead, but I’m optimistic by the progress we’ve made. These results show what happens when we stay grounded, stand firm, and put Minnesotans first.

Thank you, as always, for your support. It’s an honor to represent you and work every day for a stronger, more affordable Minnesota.

Restorative Justice Wins a Big Victory

1

I’m excited to share that House File 104, a bill I proudly co-authored, passed off the House floor this week as a stand-alone bill!

This bill might not make headlines—but it should. HF 104 creates an important legal privilege for communications that happen within restorative justice programs. Think of it like the confidentiality between a doctor and patient or a lawyer and client—it’s about creating safe, honest spaces for people to come together, take accountability, and work toward healing.

Restorative justice isn’t about sweeping things under the rug—it’s about real conversations, real consequences, and real restoration. By protecting what’s shared in those circles, we give people a chance to participate fully without fear that their words will be used against them later.

Of course, there are exceptions built in. This bill doesn’t stop mandatory reporters from doing their job, and it allows disclosure if someone’s safety is at risk or if there’s professional misconduct. It also makes sure courts can verify if someone ordered to participate is actually showing up.

Bottom line: this is a thoughtful, balanced step forward for justice in Minnesota. I’m proud to have helped carry it, and I’m even more proud to see it move ahead!

Honoring Our Heroes During National Police Week

Protecting Our Classrooms: The Fight Isn’t Over Yet

As a mom and a strong supporter of education, this issue is personal for me. Across Minnesota, schools are facing many challenges—tight budgets, staff layoffs, and a nonstop wave of mandates that make it harder for educators to focus on what really matters: our kids.

Last session alone, Democrats pushed through more than 65 costly mandates that are now straining our school systems. Instead of putting money directly into classrooms or supporting teachers, they've expanded bureaucracy—sending more dollars to state agencies while local schools are left scrambling.

Here’s the good news: House Republicans fought back and delivered real solutions. We protected nonpublic pupil aid—funding that supports students in religious, charter, and homeschool settings—and made sure parents still have the freedom to choose the best education for their kids. We also secured over $150 million in Basic Supplemental Aid, giving schools the flexibility they’ve been asking for to meet their unique needs.

Even more importantly, we delivered mandate relief—like putting an end to the seasonal worker unemployment insurance mandate that was bankrupting schools.

But we’re not out of the woods yet.

The education finance bill is still in play, and some serious concerns remain on the table. House Republicans are standing firm to keep money flowing to classrooms—not bureaucrats—and to stop any new burdens that would make it harder for our schools to succeed.

If you’re frustrated by what you’re seeing, I hear you. Please consider writing to your DFL legislative leaders and telling them to put students first. Our schools need flexibility, not more red tape—and every child deserves access to a safe, well-funded, and supportive learning environment.

We’ll keep showing up and standing with our schools. I’ll keep fighting for our classrooms, our teachers, and most of all—our kids.

A Surprise Visit from Congressman Tom Emmer!

1

You never know what the day will bring at the Capitol—but when Congressman Tom Emmer walks in unannounced, you do know it’s about to get a whole lot better. His surprise visit brought more than just a few laughs—his words of encouragement gave our caucus the boost we needed as we charge into the final stretch of session.

With spirits high and momentum on our side, we’re ready to finish strong. Let’s keep the energy up and bring it home!

Celebrating the Class of 2025!

On Thursday, I had the awesome opportunity to meet with a fantastic group of seniors from Mankato West High School—and wow, what an inspiring bunch! Congratulations to the Class of 2025—you’ve worked so hard to get to this moment, and I couldn’t be prouder of you.

As you head into this next chapter, just remember: you can do anything you put your mind to. Whether your path leads to college, trade school, the workforce, or somewhere totally unexpected, I have no doubt you’ll do amazing things.

Dream big, work hard, and keep showing the world what Mankato West grads are made of. The future is yours—go after it!

A Pit Stop Worth Making

1

This past weekend, I had the chance to swing by a local classic car show—and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! It was the perfect opportunity to catch up with some of my amazing neighbors, friends, and constituents. There’s just something about vintage cars, sunshine, and great company that makes a Saturday feel extra special.
