Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Happy Independence Day!

As we gather with family and friends this Fourth of July, I want to send you my warmest wishes and share a moment to reflect on the meaning behind this special day.

Two hundred and forty-nine years ago, courageous leaders came together to declare that all people are created equal—gifted with unalienable rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That bold spirit of freedom and hope continues to inspire us today, in every corner of Minnesota and across our nation.

In that same spirit of progress and community, here are a few exciting updates on new laws that took effect July 1—laws that I hope will make a difference in your everyday life:

Stay Hydrated, Minnesota!
Heading to a concert or a big event? Venues with over 100 people are now required to provide free water—and you’re welcome to bring your own sealed or empty bottle. Cheers to staying refreshed and safe in our summer heat!

Investing in Our Future
Minnesota is committing nearly $26 billion to our schools over the next two years. That means better resources for students, support for educators, and expanded opportunities to build a strong workforce. Plus, a $100 million investment will help school staff like paraprofessionals and bus drivers get summer unemployment benefits—they deserve it!

Bass Fishing, All Year Long
Anglers rejoice! Bass season is now open year-round, giving you more chances to enjoy Minnesota’s beautiful lakes and reel in that perfect catch—whether it’s summer, fall, or any time in between.

Strengthening Public Safety
We’re enacting tougher penalties for those who assault firefighters, enhancing tools to fight wage theft, and protecting kids from fentanyl exposure. We’ve also begun the careful phaseout of the Stillwater prison, reinvesting in mental health and community support programs.

Fighting Fraud, Protecting Your Tax Dollars
From better oversight to new fraud prevention laws, we’re working hard to make government more efficient and accountable. Your tax dollars should work for you—not get wasted.

Meet Minnesota’s New State Fossil!
Say hello to Castoroides ohioensis—a giant, prehistoric beaver that now proudly represents Minnesota’s rich natural history. How cool is that?

This is just a glimpse of what’s new in Minnesota law. If you’re curious—or just like to geek out on legislation with your morning coffee—you can check out the full list [here].

This Independence Day, let’s also honor the heroes among us: our veterans, peace officers, first responders, and everyday citizens who serve with courage and kindness. Their dedication reminds us that freedom requires vigilance and love—passed on from one generation to the next.

Whether you’re watching fireworks light up the night sky, enjoying a backyard BBQ, or simply spending time with loved ones, I hope your holiday is filled with joy, gratitude, and pride in this beautiful country we call home.

Happy Independence Day, friends! Let freedom ring!

Sincerely,

Representative Erica Schwartz
