Rep. Tom Sexton: Complete State Budget Approved During Special Session
St. Paul, MN — The Minnesota House of Representatives finalized a new, two-year state budget during a special session on Monday. Rep. Tom Sexton (R - Waseca) highlighted that the negotiation process was marked by bipartisan cooperation which produced bills with provisions desired by both parties.
Due to delays during the regular session, the special session became necessary to complete budget work before the expiration of the current two-year budget cycle on June 30th.
House Republicans were able to deliver on their promise to hold Minnesota families harmless from tax increases, despite more than $8 billion in proposed tax hikes by Democrats. Furthermore, Republicans were able to protect and provide funding for rural ambulance services, emergency medical services, and hospitals at a time when many providers across Greater Minnesota are struggling.
"This special session provided us with an opportunity to pass meaningful legislation for Minnesota families, schools, small businesses, and more," Rep. Sexton said. "I am proud of the work we accomplished considering the narrow divide in the legislature. Despite the significant progress we made reining in government spending, to the benefit of hardworking Minnesotans, our work is far from over. As interim begins, I am already looking forward to getting back to work on the issues that matter most to you and our communities during the next legislative session."
