November Forecast Confirms Rising Budget Concerns, Rep. Sexton Responds

St. Paul, MN — Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) released its November budget forecast today, outlining a state economy where spending continues to exceed revenue. The report shows a growing structural imbalance, with the projected deficit in the future budget years now roughly three times higher than what lawmakers expected at the end of the 2025 session.

Rep. Sexton issued the following statement:

“The latest forecast confirms what many of us have warned about for months. State spending is climbing faster than revenues, and the imbalance is getting worse. Minnesota cannot sustain a path where government grows at a rate that families and businesses are unable to match. Despite our efforts last session to remedy this problem, it is clear that our work must continue. We need to take a hard look at our budget, eliminate the unchecked occurrence of fraud across all State programs, and protect the whistleblowers who report fraud. To resolve the deficit, we must identify areas where spending can be brought under control, rather than trying to increase revenue by hiking taxes even more.”

"Minnesota families are already dealing with higher costs in their daily lives. They should not be expected to carry the financial burden caused by the DFL trifecta last biennium. When we return next session, my focus will be on rebalancing the budget, strengthening oversight, and restoring long-term stability to our finances.”
