Legislative Update Dear neighbors, This week we saw some movement on an important proposal: allowing a local option sales tax. So why does this matter, and why are we talking about it at all? In rural Minnesota, most of our fire halls are staffed by volunteers who step up when their community needs them most. These fire stations don’t just respond to emergencies—they also play a direct role in keeping our Insurance Services Office (ISO) ratings lower. For those unfamiliar, ISO ratings range from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best and 10 being the highest risk. Many rural communities fall on the higher end of that scale—not because of a lack of effort, but because of distance, infrastructure, and response-time challenges. And those ratings matter, because insurance companies use them to help determine what families pay to insure their homes. That’s exactly why maintaining strong, local fire halls is so important. When a fire happens, your local fire department is your fastest response and your first source of water and protection. It’s not just about emergency response—it’s about protecting property, lowering costs for families, and keeping communities safe and stable. This issue is personal to me, because I know what these rural departments mean to the towns they serve. Keeping them strong is something worth fighting for.
