Legislative Update from Rep. Jeff Backer

Friday, May 19, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

We are entering the final weekend of the 2023 legislative session as we are required to adjourn by midnight on Monday. There are several items that remain unresolved, so I expect us to work through the weekend. I plan on providing a more comprehensive wrap-up when the dust settles next week.

Education

Earlier this week, the K-12 Education budget and policy bill was passed by House Democrats.

This bill includes 65 mandates that will put many of our local school districts in serious financial jeopardy. The legislature should stop trying to micromanage schools and instead let locally elected school boards, superintendents, teachers, and most importantly parents decide what's best for them.

Public Safety

The public safety budget bill approved this week is a bad bill that will make Minnesota less safe and infringes on the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding Minnesotans.

Call Gov. Walz and tell him to VETO this bill.
