RELEASE: BILL EXEMPTING RETIRED VETERAN PAY FROM STATE INCOME TAX CLEARS FIRST COMMITTEE

Bill Exempting Retired Veteran Pay from State Income Tax Clears First Committee Hurdle

St. Paul, MN- House File 299, authored by Rep. Josh Heintzeman (R-Nisswa), passed the Veterans Affairs Division today.

HF 299 exempts retired veterans’ pensions from state income taxes. Currently, Minnesota is one of only a handful of states that fully tax retired military veterans’ retirement pay. Rep. Heintzeman said that he wanted to author a bill that would incentivize more veterans to retire in Minnesota.

“I wanted to offer a bill that would encourage more veterans to retire in Minnesota,” said Heintzeman.“It’s unfortunate that Minnesota is one of only a handful of states that fully tax veteran retirement benefits. Our veterans deserve better and this bill is a step in the right direction—thanking our veterans for their sacrifice and service to our nation.”

HF 299 has been referred to the Tax Committee where it awaits a hearing.
