The State Budget Forecast
Today, the state budget forecast was officially released. Minnesota state government is projected to have a $1.6 billion budget surplus in the next biennium. This budget forecast will significantly impact how the Minnesota Legislature crafts the next biennial budget. Fortunately, this budget forecast looks positive.
This is a dramatic shift from just a few months ago. Last November, the Minnesota Management and Budget office said that Minnesota was facing a $1.3 billion budget deficit.
In Minnesota, our state constitution requires that we balance our state budget. We cannot spend more money than we take in. This budget forecast proves that we do not need tax increases to get to a balanced budget. Governor Tim Walz should abandon his plan for more tax increases. Instead, we should return the $1.6 billion budget surplus to the people through tax cuts.
