Statement from Rep. Bobbie Harder on the November Budget Forecast

St. Paul – The state released its latest economic forecast on Thursday, and while the numbers show a short-term surplus, the news is far from reassuring. The report from Minnesota Management and Budget projects a $2.5 billion surplus today, but it also reveals a significant structural imbalance in the years ahead. Minnesota is projected to face a $3 billion deficit by 2028-29. And if the surplus is spent down instead of saved, that deficit could grow to more than $5 billion.

Representative Harder (R-Henderson Twp) issued the following statement in response:

“Today’s forecast shows a surplus for now, but we are on track for a deficit in the years ahead if the state does not rein in overspending and take fraud seriously. Minnesota families balance their budgets and make responsible choices every day. State government must do the same.

I will continue working to protect taxpayers, strengthen oversight, and ensure Minnesota remains on solid financial footing so our state can support the services and communities that depend on it.”
