Legislative Update With just a short time left in the legislative session, we need to get things across the finish line. This week, I want to highlight a few issues that matter to families, taxpayers, and communities across our area.  A Step Forward on Fraud PreventionThe House passed Senate File 856 this week, a bill creating a statewide Office of the Inspector General. This has been a major priority for House Republicans throughout the biennium because Minnesotans deserve better than what we have seen over the last several years. Too many taxpayer dollars have been lost to fraud, and too often the state has acted only after the money was already gone. The Office of the Inspector General will give Minnesota a stronger watchdog to investigate fraud and misuse of public funds across state agencies and programs. It will have the ability to issue subpoenas, review records, refer cases for civil or criminal action, and report its findings to the public. This will not solve every problem overnight, however it's an important step in the right direction. Taxpayer dollars should be protected, and public programs should serve the people they were created to help. Medicaid Work Requirements Included in Health BillThe House passed a Health bill that included work and community engagement requirements for certain able-bodied adults on Medicaid. This is a reform Republicans have supported for years because it strikes the right balance. Medicaid should be there for seniors, children, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and Minnesotans going through difficult times. Those benefits need to be protected for the people who truly need them. At the same time, we have a responsibility to respect the taxpayers who pay for these programs. For able-bodied adults who can work, train, volunteer, or go to school, it is reasonable to expect some level of participation. this is about keeping the program focused, encouraging independence where possible, and making sure taxpayer-funded benefits are handled responsibly. This provision helps bring Minnesota into line with federal requirements, which is important for protecting federal funding and avoiding unnecessary costs to the state.
