Legislative Update With the legislative session now concluded, I wanted to provide an update on some of the work completed this year to help make Minnesota more affordable, protect taxpayers, and restore common sense to state government. While this session was not perfect, and there is still more work to do, House Republicans secured several important wins for Minnesota families, seniors, small businesses, local communities, and taxpayers in a divided House. Making Minnesota More AffordableOne of the top priorities this session was addressing affordability. Minnesotans continue to face rising costs for everyday necessities, and state government should not add to those burdens. House Republicans pushed for meaningful relief and secured more than $400 million in tax and fee reductions, including: - Property tax relief
- Reductions in car tab fees
- Tax conformity measures benefiting families, farmers, and small businesses
- Extension of the pass-through entity tax provision, a SALT (state and local tax) workaround that helps many small businesses at no additional cost to the state
These are practical, commonsense steps that help ease financial pressure on families, seniors, farmers, and small businesses already facing tight budgets. Protecting Medicaid and TaxpayersDuring this legislative session, we passed work and community engagement requirements for certain able-bodied adults receiving Medicaid benefits. Medicaid should remain focused on protecting seniors, individuals with disabilities, children, pregnant women, and those who are truly vulnerable. Requiring able-bodied adults who can work to seek employment, attend school, participate in job training, or volunteer is a reasonable expectation. These requirements help protect the integrity of the program, respect taxpayers, strengthen communities, and encourage workforce participation. Holding Government AccountableHouse Republicans continued efforts to strengthen accountability and oversight within state government. Minnesotans have seen too many examples of fraud, waste, and abuse in public programs, and taxpayers deserve confidence that their dollars are being protected responsibly. This year, we advanced several anti-fraud reforms, including: - Creation of an independent statewide Office of Inspector General to investigate fraud across state government
- Stronger tools to recover stolen taxpayer dollars
- A 100% tax penalty on money obtained through fraudulent schemes
- Increased oversight and reporting requirements for state programs
Public funds should serve the people who truly need assistance, not those seeking to exploit the system. These reforms are important steps toward restoring public trust and improving accountability in state government. Working for the DistrictSeveral bills I authored also moved forward this legislative session. These proposals address real issues facing our communities and focus on practical solutions that improve accountability and government operations. - Hasenpfeffer (HF 357): Passed as part of the commerce bill. Hasenpfeffer has deep roots in many local communities, and this change helps ensure local tournaments and social games can continue without unnecessary legal confusion.
- Victim Restitution Accountability (HF 3496): Strengthens accountability for offenders and helps ensure victims receive the restitution they are owed. Under this bill, offenders who are financially able to pay restitution must do so before qualifying for supervision abatement.
- Program Integrity Reporting (HF 4327): Requires annual program integrity reporting to the Legislature, providing lawmakers with better information regarding oversight, investigations, licensing, and enforcement activities to help safeguard taxpayer dollars.
- New Germany Wastewater Treatment Facility Expansion (HF 461): This important $4 million infrastructure investment will help meet the community’s long-term needs, support responsible growth, and ensure the city has the capacity necessary for future development.
Good legislation is not always flashy. Often, it is about solving real problems, improving accountability, and ensuring government works more effectively for the people it serves. Looking AheadMany Minnesota families continue to feel the pressure of rising costs, higher taxes, and economic uncertainty. I will continue working to bring greater discipline to state spending, protect taxpayers, and make Minnesota a more affordable place to live, work, raise a family, and retire.
