Legislative UpdateMaintaining public confidence in our elections requires transparency, accountability, and a willingness to address concerns when they arise. Recently, members of the Minnesota House Elections Finance and Government Operations Committee submitted formal public data requests to multiple counties, including Wright, Stearns, Winona, and Hennepin, to review voter registration records and better understand how voter rolls are maintained. Of those counties, only Hennepin County provided a response. Analysis of the Hennepin County data identified several issues that warrant further attention, including: Entries with unrealistic or impossible birth dates Records missing key information such as addresses or birth dates Possible duplicate registrations or indications of individuals who may have voted more than once One Minneapolis precinct where approximately one in five voters was flagged with eligibility questions Thousands of voters listed with a “challenged” status due to concerns about eligibility After a formal request for voter data was made, the Secretary of State’s Office contacted election officials across all 87 Minnesota counties, informing them that a public official had requested voter master lists. The office advised counties to provide only the information specifically required under state law, including a voter’s name, residence address, and full date of birth. Counties were further instructed not to release any additional data beyond the statutory requirements, such as email addresses, voter registration status, or information related to inactive voters. This guidance has raised concerns among some legislators about transparency and whether additional review is being unnecessarily limited. Hennepin County represents nearly one-fifth of Minnesota’s population, so issues identified there highlight the importance of continued oversight and careful review statewide. Transparency and cooperation between agencies and legislators are essential to ensuring voter rolls remain accurate and that Minnesotans can have confidence in the election process. Election integrity should not be a partisan issue. Regardless of political views, voters expect elections that are fair, secure, and trustworthy. Addressing concerns openly and strengthening safeguards where needed helps maintain confidence in our democratic system. I will continue supporting efforts that promote accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship of our election systems. Minnesotans expect their tax dollars to be used responsibly. Our caucus is committed to strengthening oversight, preventing fraud and abuse in state programs, and ensuring state agencies operate with transparency and accountability. Priority #2: Public safety.
Safe communities are essential to a strong Minnesota. We will continue working to support law enforcement, provide resources for first responders, and advance policies that prioritize the safety of families, businesses, and local communities. Priority #3: Rural investment and support.
Greater Minnesota plays a vital role in our state’s success. We are focused on supporting agriculture, strengthening rural infrastructure, expanding economic opportunities, and ensuring rural voices are represented in state decision-making. Priority #4: Affordability and responsible budgeting.
