Legislative Update We’ve wrapped up our first week back at the Capitol, and the 2026 legislative session is now fully underway. Tuesday marked the official start, and committee work was paused so members could gather on the House floor to honor Speaker Emeritus Melissa Hortman. Legislators from both parties came together in remembrance of a leader who dedicated so much of her time and effort to serving the people of Minnesota. While we did not always agree on policy, her commitment to our state and her constituents was clear. Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Event Later that evening, I attended a legislative dinner with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, where we discussed key priorities for the upcoming session. The conversation focused on improving Minnesota’s economic competitiveness by reducing costs, strengthening our workforce, ensuring fiscal accountability, and pursuing balanced regulations that support job creators while protecting our communities. These discussions help inform my work as we look for practical ways to improve affordability and support Minnesota families and businesses.   A Tied House Like last year, the House remains evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. Committee work resumed Wednesday and, unsurprisingly, included intense debate. Despite strong disagreements, we must find ways to work together and make reasonable compromises if we expect to pass meaningful legislation. So far, there is still much work to be done. HF 357 - Hasenpfeffer On Thursday, I introduced a bill that should be fairly uncontroversial. It would amend Minnesota’s gambling statute to add hasenpfeffer to the list of card games classified as permitted “social skill” games under state law, allowing small, low-stakes tournaments that are exempt from certain gambling restrictions.
