St. Paul, MN - Yesterday, the Minnesota House and Senate passed the 2025 Legacy Budget, sending it to Governor Walz for his anticipated approval. State Representative Pete Johnson (DFL - Duluth) secured funding for the Great Lakes Aquarium and the Lake Superior Zoo in the budget.
“The Legacy Budget invests in so many amazing projects throughout our state, namely the ones that highlight and connect Minnesotans to our great outdoors,” said Rep. Johnson. “Duluth’s Great Lakes Aquarium and the Lake Superior Zoo are shining examples of institutions that entertain and educate visitors, focusing on the environment that makes our region and Minnesota so special. I’m proud of these investments that will help these community staples continue their work, and I want to thank the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa for their partnership in helping to secure these funds for the aquarium.”
The Legacy Budget invests $264,000 in the Lake Superior Zoo, and $400,000 in the Great Lakes Aquarium for its lake sturgeon project.
In 2008, Minnesotans voted to pass the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution, dedicated to protecting and enhancing Minnesota’s outdoor heritage - clean water, parks and trails, arts, and cultural heritage. Since 2009, the Legacy Amendment has generated nearly $5.7 billion in funding for projects.
