Rep. Johnson statement on the Trump Administration’s cancellation of $50 million for Duluth-based Minnesota Power

Friday, October 3, 2025

Duluth, MN - This week, the Trump administration announced over $7.5 billion in cuts to energy projects, including a $50 million grant for Minnesota Power that would have improved grid reliability, modernized transmission lines, helped spur clean energy innovation, and created good-paying jobs.

“The termination of this federal grant is not producing savings that are being passed on to Minnesotans, in fact it threatens to increase energy prices for working families,” said Rep. Pete Johnson (DFL - Duluth). “The Trump administration is setting Duluth and the entire region back when it comes to modernizing our energy, and the list of impacted states implies the decision might be more based in retribution than responsible policy. This is not the first time this year we’ve seen allocated dollars for our community be clawed back by the federal government, and I only hope Congressman Stauber earnestly joins the effort in appealing this decision.”
