Education Update

06.09.2026

Dear friends,

Thank you for the incredible work you do every day to educate, mentor, and inspire Minnesota’s students. Your dedication strengthens our communities and helps shape the future of our state.

This legislative session, the Minnesota Legislature passed the Pension and Retirement Omnibus Bill, which included several important provisions affecting members of the Teachers Retirement Association and the St. Paul Teachers Retirement Fund Association. The bill made administrative and technical improvements to strengthen Minnesota’s pension systems and helped ensure teachers continue to receive the retirement security they have earned.

I was proud to play an active role in advancing pension legislation on a number of fronts through my work on the Legislative Commission on Pensions and Retirement. Throughout the session, I worked to keep retirement issues affecting educators a priority and to support policies that strengthen pension security for current and future retirees.

While I’m pleased we were able to continue making progress, I know there's more work to do. In conversations with teachers across Minnesota, I consistently hear concerns about retirement age penalties, cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), and the career rule that I’ve consistently supported. Many educators who have dedicated decades to the classroom face significant reductions in benefits if they retire before full retirement age. Others worry about inflation eroding the value of their pensions over time or believe the retirement system should better recognize long careers in education.

These concerns deserve continued attention. I remain committed to working with teachers, retirees, and pension experts to pursue responsible improvements that strengthen retirement security, address retirement age penalties, protect retirees from inflation, and ensure the system fairly reflects the service of career educators.

Protecting teacher pensions is about honoring the commitments made to the men and women who dedicate their lives to educating our children. I will continue advocating for thoughtful pension improvements that support educators while maintaining the long-term strength and sustainability of Minnesota’s retirement systems.

Thank you for your service to Minnesota students, families, and communities. It is an honor to represent you and to work on issues that impact your retirement security and financial future.

Please stay in touch and feel free to contact me anytime at 612-600-4539.

Sincerely,

Rep. Danny Nadeau
